In May 2026, a major technological breakthrough was achieved in biodegradable plastic packaging: when BASF’s Ecoflex® PBAT material is blended with starch, the resulting products—such as meal boxes and trays—achieve a 90% degradation rate within 180 days under industrial composting conditions. This product retains the traditional advantages of plastics—impact resistance, thermal insulation, and airtight sealing—while addressing the challenge of white pollution, and has already obtained national certification for food-contact safety. Several domestic companies have established production lines with capacities of tens of thousands of tons, reducing costs by 40% compared to 2023 and meeting the conditions for large-scale substitution. Currently, chain restaurants and fresh‑food e‑commerce platforms are placing bulk orders, and the market size for biodegradable single‑use plastic packaging is expected to exceed RMB 30 billion by the end of 2026.
